Why did primitive people build dwellings?

Even animals build dwellings or use ready-made shelters for housing. For example, many animals dig holes, beavers build huts, and birds build nests. People at all times tried to find or build some kind of shelter from the wind, rain and cold. Primitive people often lived in caves, and if they could not find a suitable cave, then they had to build some kind of dwelling.
