Why did the artisans unite in workshops and adopt church statutes?

The artisans reasoned quite reasonably that enmity between them would not lead to anything good for each of them. It is better to agree with each other, develop general rules (shop charter) regarding what products to produce, what quality (according to a single model), how much and how to sell, and then get a stable profit without spending energy on mutual squabbling, competition among themselves. It also helped them not to allow foreigners to trade on their territory, reduced the tax burden, and did not allow suppliers of raw materials to dictate their terms.
