Why did the British generally support William III of Orange, and the Duke of Monmouth was denied support?

This can be explained by the following reasons: the Duke of Monmouth did not have sufficient rights to the throne, while the wife of William of Orange belonged to the Stuart family, which was beyond doubt; by the beginning of William’s landing, the reign of James II manifested itself with even more negative consequences; William of Orange had much more power than Monmouth. Thus, Orange had a much greater advantage.
