Why did the church react painfully to the discoveries of 17th century scientists?

The church reacted negatively not only to the discoveries of scholars in the 17th century. She collected and carefully plundered any scientific knowledge of ancient scientists. What she could not appropriate – she destroyed. This knowledge directly contradicted the false dogmas of the church. Church leaders were well aware that they were fraudsters and that the church itself was deceitful. If progressive and truthful knowledge became the property of the general public, the church would be destroyed. It was beneficial for the Church that their flock, for the most part, could not read. It is much easier to manage such a herd and receive significant material benefits from it.
