Why did the Egyptians call the desert red earth?

Mostly, the ancient Egyptians inhabited the fertile valleys of the Nile River, in the distance to the south of which there was a large desert that resembled red land. There, as the Egyptians thought, was the kingdom of the formidable Set, where death, devastation and war constantly reigned.
