Why did the Egyptians roll their manuscripts into a scroll?

There was another way – you could fold it in half, for example. However, paper or parchment could succumb to such manipulations, but papyrus did not. It was convenient and correct to fold it only by twisting it into a scroll. It was not an element of decoration and aesthetic choice; on the contrary, it had only practical significance. This is explained by the fact that papyrus is very fragile and material, and if you fold it in half, it will tear. Therefore, archaeologists find very few surviving ancient Egyptian historical sources on papyrus.
