Why did the German emperors seek to be crowned in Rome?

Germanic rulers upheld the tradition of Frankish kings and were crowned in Rome. The reason for this tradition was that the Catholic leader, the Pope, sat in the papal area in Rome. He crowned the rulers and thereby proved the chosenness of the given ruler by God. In the Middle Ages, secular and spiritual authorities supported each other. In the eyes of the people, German kings became much more authoritative if they were crowned by the leaders of the Catholic Church, since religion occupied an important place in the life of the people of that time.
