Why did the goals and results of the first European expeditions, as a rule, do not coincide?

European travelers went on sea and land expeditions to a large extent to explore new markets and resettlement. But often they stumbled upon new unexplored territories. The reason for this result was the abundance of unexplored land, the population of which did not take an active part in world trade. Thus, Columbus, who went in search of India, discovered a new continent. Such situations were encountered on expeditions quite often. But thanks to them, the world has acquired a modern look.
