Why did the rise in wealth of the Catholic Church begin to threaten its authority?

The Catholic Church was much richer than the Orthodox. The Pope even claimed a leading role in the state. But the growing wealth and land of the church threatened its existence. People stopped considering the official church to be righteous, because its riches did not correspond to the biblical commandments. For the same reason, heretics and Protestants appeared who opposed their ideas to the church ones. They promoted insubordination of the official church. Protestants formed organizations that undermined her influence.
