Why did the Roman authorities persecute Christians?

This is due to the fact that in the 1-3 century, Christianity was actively spreading throughout the territory of the Roman Empire. There were more and more followers of this religion every day. This could have caused irreversible consequences for the Roman Empire. Thus, in those days there was a constant persecution of Christians and those who spread this religion. Nevertheless, already in the 4th century, Christianity became the state religion of the empire.
