Why did the Romans choose to destroy the rich trading cities of Corinth and Carthage to the ground?

The Romans destroyed Carthage to its foundations, because they feared that it would be able to rebuild and unleash a new war against Rome. In fact, for the same reason, Corinth, which was a major trading city in Greece, was destroyed. So the Romans wanted to get rid of a competitor.
