Why did the Russians prefer to negotiate with the Tatar-Mongols, while the crusaders were mercilessly killed?

In the middle of the 13th century, the Mongol-Tatars invaded Russia. They ravaged many principalities. Thus, Prince Nevsky recognized the power of the khan, so that he would not ruin the Novgorod land as well. At the same time, the crusaders invaded the lands of the principality, but no one thought to obey them. After which they were defeated twice.
