Why did the settlements in Ancient Crete not have defensive walls?

The king of the island of Crete subdued the cities of Greece, reigned in the Aegean Sea. He had a strong fleet, the Cretans defended themselves at sea. The island was washed by water from all sides. It was difficult to get there. Since the state was one, no protection was required.
