Why did the Spartans win the Battle of Thermopylae?

The Spartans did not win in the Battle of Thermopylae, they detained the Persians and allowed the main forces to withdraw so as not to be surrounded. Thus, Leonidas and his 300-man security detachment remained to cover the withdrawal of the Greek troops. True, in this battle they all died against the superior forces of the enemy.
