Why did the struggle between the democratic and total tendencies in the post-war years end with a new wave of repression?

The elite society has not yet slipped enough to give up the power to democracy. The repression was aimed at destroying the carriers of democratic tendencies and intimidating those who sympathize with them. Many soldiers and officers in the West saw that socialism was not capable of providing a decent standard of living. And they needed to be taken under control again.
