Why didn’t Philip declare himself king of Greece?

1) After the battle of Chaeronea and the formation of the Corinthian (Hellenic) union (Sparta did not participate):

a) Philip II became the commander of the alliance army, which gave him a great advantage in the war with Persia;

b) internecine wars ceased, which ensured the security of the borders of Macedonia from the south;

c) while maintaining the internal laws of each of the participants in the Hellenic union, the possibility of uprisings against the hegemony of Macedonia was minimized.

Thus, Philip II actually united the whole of Greece under his rule, without accepting the title of king for the appearance of an equal union.

2) Further hostilities could greatly weaken his army: Athens had a large fleet (about 360 triremes), the previous sieges of Byzantium and Perinth to control the Hellespont ended unsuccessfully, and so without a fight Macedonia ensured control over the straits.
