Why didn’t the Spartans participate in the Marathon Battle?

The Spartan army arrived at Athens the day after the Battle of Marathon. Having chosen a wait-and-see attitude, the Spartans feared large losses in the battle, since the announcement of large losses could provoke unrest of the helots (helots were landowners who had a position in Sparta between slaves and serfs). Therefore, the participation in the battle of its own troops Sparta decided rather carefully.
