Why do bacteria and fungi function as destroyers in ecosystems?

If we take, for example, a tree as part of a forest ecosystem, then both fungi and bacteria can take an active part in the destruction of wood. To start, they only need suitable conditions: the presence of water for a long time, the presence of oxygen and the tree itself. If there is enough moisture, fungi and bacteria will work together to decompose the damp wood.
