Why do earthworms crawl to the soil surface in rainy weather?

Earthworms are soil inhabitants. Earthworms got their name because in rainy weather they crawl to the surface of the soil. It turns out that this is no coincidence. These worms, like all worms, do not yet have a respiratory system. They breathe with the entire surface of the body. But during rain, water displaces air from the soil, they have nothing to breathe and earthworms crawl to the surface. Many of them die in the process. Try to bypass the worms, do not crush, because the fertility of the soil depends on them.
