Why do mountain rivers not freeze even in the harsh winter?

The streams of water in mountain rivers are constantly mixed. The upper layers of water cool down in the frost, but do not have time to freeze and again end up at the bottom of the river. In their place, warmer streams come from the bottom of the river. And in ponds, in lakes or in flat rivers, the upper layer of water cools down and freezes.
