Why do passengers experience ear pain when the plane is gaining altitude or landing?

During takeoff and landing of an aircraft, the altitude changes relative to sea and ground level. The higher the rise in air density becomes less, also the atmospheric pressure becomes lower. The human body (ear membranes) gets used to the conditions in which it is located and with a sharp change in pressure, we feel discomfort for some time.
