Why do social norms serve as patterns of behavior?

The norms of social behavior serve as the template from which everyone should start. They streamline the social system itself. Without them, we would again slide back to primitiveness. Social norms were built gradually, step by step, they obeyed the development of social consciousness. Social norms are firmly grounded; they didn’t just happen. For example, we give way to our elders. This is a social norm that has been developed since ancient times, when old and frail people were protected from hard work and other physical activity.
