Why do some animals change color in autumn?

Many animals change color closer to winter: hare, arctic fox, weasel, squirrel, ermine. Nature made sure that in winter the animals do not stand out much against the background of snow and trees. Otherwise, they may become someone’s prey. Therefore, some animals turn white, others, for example, squirrels change their red color to gray in order to become invisible, jumping along the branches.
