Why do tree-dwelling mammals have eyes set close together?

Animals with close-set eyes have stereoscopic vision – the fields of view of two eyes overlap and objects in this overlap are perceived three-dimensionally. For a mammal living on a tree, it is important to navigate in a three-dimensional environment: to understand how far away the tree is to jump on; evaluate the thickness of the branch – is it suitable for support; determine the distance to the predator and prey; plan an escape or attack maneuver.
