Charlemagne sought to create an empire that would become the successor to the Roman Empire. To do this, he needed, in addition to a strong army, a powerful bureaucratic apparatus. It was educated people who were to become the backbone of the administration. To effectively manage various aspects of the life of the state, people had to be literate, arithmetic. An important subject was jurisprudence, because the empire needed uniform ordered laws. Education in military affairs did not interfere either, since the experience of the past could bring victory.
