Why does humanity need religion?

It is difficult to give an unambiguous answer to the question concerning religion. People from the most ancient times believed that there are some kind of higher powers. Ancient religions were aimed at glorifying the gods who were believed at the time to rule the world. People wanted to appease them, as a result of which to get more favorable conditions for life. But over time, religion was transformed into a belief in a single God, and therefore became an instrument for managing society. Thanks to religion, many monarchs during the days of feudalism held power, and ordinary people naively believed that God could bring them any benefits.
