Why does paleontological evidence provide the most compelling evidence for macroevolutionary processes?

Based on the remains of paleontological data, they reconstruct the external appearance of extinct organisms, learn about the animal and plant world of the past, and compose phylogenetic series. When constructing taxonomic systems, signs of kinship of groups of organisms are taken into account, both with living groups and with already extinct ones. In general, the pedigree tree clearly shows the general nature of macroevolution: the improvement of the organization of organisms from simpler to more complex, divergent (manifested in the divergence of characters) and adaptive nature of evolution.
