Why doesn’t the water burn?

Water is made up of two elements: hydrogen and oxygen. The hydrogen ignites, but the oxygen doesn’t. Water is much less reactive and does not react with oxygen and therefore will not burn.

Water is so non-reactive that interaction with fire is completely physical. It absorbs a lot of heat very quickly and prevents oxygen from entering the fire. Therefore, water is the easiest way to extinguish wood fire.
