Why, during the reign of Octavian Augustus, was the country still called an Empire, and not a republic?

Strictly speaking, de facto the republic has not disappeared anywhere. Princip was considered the “first in the Senate”. The Senate continued to be considered the highest governing body. The territory outside the Empire was under the direct control of the emperor (although this is already more than 90 percent of all lands occupied by the Romans).
