Why is carbon called the main element of living nature, and silicon – the main element of inanimate nature?

Carbon is the “central building block” that can support complex ramified structures while remaining strong – but not so strong that you can’t easily rebuild the whole thing later.

Silicon does not arise as a free element in nature; this occurs mainly in the form of silicon dioxide, SiO2 and in numerous silicates. Most of the sands are mainly silica, and many rocks and minerals are silicate materials.
