Why is it beneficial for mushrooms to have a large mycelium surface area?

Mycelium – (from the Greek mykes – mushroom), mycelium, the vegetative body of the fungus (thallus), consisting of thin branching filaments – hyphae. The network they form serves as a mount and transport system for the fungus to pump nutrients.

Mushrooms are not able to assimilate large particles of food, therefore they absorb exclusively liquid substances through the entire surface of the body, while the huge surface area of the mycelium is very beneficial.

The larger the surface of the body of the fungus, the more it will be able to absorb various liquid substances suitable for nutrition.
