Why is it necessary to huddle potatoes?

During hilling, the soil becomes looser and lighter. This is done in order to:

1) More oxygen was supplied to the roots of potatoes (and not only),

2) During hilling, part of the weeds is destroyed,

3) Loose and lighter soil encourages root growth. This allows more water and minerals to be absorbed, resulting in a good harvest. In addition, such soil allows water to pass through better,

4) More tubers are formed.
