Why is the country on the east coast of the Mediterranean called Phenicia?

Because the ancient people who lived there were called Phoenicians. This name was given to them by the ancient Greeks due to the fact that they brought them dates. The Phoenicians themselves were ancient navigators and traders. We can say that they were determined to integrate with other ancient countries and peoples. They were most interested in personal gain.
