Why is the Edict of Nantes so remarkable? What human right did he elevate to law?

The Edict of Nantes, adopted on April 13, 1598, consisted of 93 articles and 36 secret decrees, and mainly concerned the Catholic faith.

Its main feature was that in France, Huguenot Protestants received religious rights, that is, in fact, they were equal in rights with Catholics.

The Edict of Nantes elevated one of the fundamental human rights to the rank of law, namely, the right to freely choose a person’s religion, and the impossibility of persecution for religious reasons.

But this situation in France did not last long, and the edict was canceled in 1685.
