Why is the function argument always written in parentheses cos (x) and not cosx in programming languages?

The thing is that: cos (x) is the name of a variable or other object that is valid in programming languages. And parentheses and other parentheses in the name are not allowed. This is why this function argument is written this way. And not because someone wrote extra parentheses.
