Why is the immunity of a judge viewed as a guarantee of his independence?

A judge by occupation has to pass a verdict on everyone who appealed to the court. Including it can be officials or their close people.
If the judge was not protected by immunity, such people could use their official position to threaten the judge, and thus win him over to their side.
