The evolutionary lineages leading to humans and chimpanzees split (according to molecular data) about 5.5 – 6.5 million years ago (or, perhaps, somewhat earlier – up to 8 million years). It is clear that the transition to bipedal walking was associated with significant changes in the way of life.
