Why is the value of atmospheric pressure expressed in millimeters of mercury?

Atmospheric pressure is measured using a barometer. The mercury barometer consists of a glass tube, 1 meter long, one end of which is sealed. This tube is filled with mercury. The open end of the tube is lowered into a bowl, which also contains mercury. If the tube is turned over, the mercury will pour out of it to a certain level and stop. There is a scale on the tube that helps to calculate how much mercury is left in the tube. This will be the value of atmospheric pressure. The division value of this scale is millimeters; therefore, the value of atmospheric pressure is measured in ml of mercury.
