Why is the war in Afghanistan considered a Cold War crisis?

The war in Afghanistan gave a powerful impetus to the fact that relations between the two opposing systems again sharply heated. The fact is that until 1979 there was a relatively calm time in relations between the USSR and the United States, which for a time were aggravated by the war in Vietnam. The Afghan war forced Western countries to impose sanctions against the Soviet Union, boycott sports competitions both in Moscow and in Los Angeles. The same war led to the beginning of a powerful economic crisis in the USSR. All this created a lot of tension within the Cold War.
