Why should the energy consumption of food slightly exceed the energy expenditure?

If the calorie content of the diet is lower than our daily energy expenditure, then the body will experience an energy deficit. In order to get more energy, the body will have to break down reserves – subcutaneous fat, liver glycogen. This will be the case until these energy sources run out. Then the body will begin to destroy itself in order to provide energy to the brain, kidneys, heart. In such conditions, exhaustion quickly sets in and all organs begin to suffer. If the calorie content is slightly higher than our expenditure, then the body will be able to store a little in the liver to spend when the need arises – for example, a person will run after a departing bus.
