Because some inanimate objects and phenomena may have some sign of living nature. For example, fire can “absorb” oxygen and emit carbon dioxide (and these are signs of living things), icicles can “grow” (also a sign of living things). But only a living organism has in the aggregate all the characteristics of a living organism.
