Why was the Athenian maritime union created? What benefits did he bring to Athens?

The Athenian Maritime Union (the second name is Delos) is a military alliance of the Greek coastal states. The initiators of the creation of the union were Athens on the idea of Themistocles. The purpose of the union was the liberation of the Greek cities, the continuation of the war with the Persians at sea and the opposition to the new invasions of the Persians into the territory of Greece. The island of Delossus became the economic center of the Athenian maritime union, and Athens became the military center.

All states that entered the union were required to either equip their ships for military operations, or contribute in cash.

Over time, Athens became a thriving trading city state. The markets were saturated with goods. Athenian ships ensured the safety of movement in the Aegean Sea.
