Why was Voronezh chernozem soil called a black diamond at the World Exhibition in Paris?

At the world exhibition in Paris V.V. Dokuchaev presented a whole collection of Russian soils. Everyone especially remembered the monolith of the famous chernozem from the Voronezh region in the size of one cubic fathom (9.7m). This collection was awarded a gold medal, and the chernozem soil was recognized as the standard of fertility – the black diamond, the King of soils.
