Why were castles built in the Middle Ages? Why did they stop building over time?

A medieval castle is a stone or wooden defensive structure that belonged to a feudal lord. In the center of the castle was the donjon – the tallest tower of the castle, which served as the residence of the lord. The well-fortified castle served as a refuge for the local population during the invasion of rejection and could withstand a long siege.

From the moment gunpowder penetrated Europe and the development of artillery (14-15 centuries), the construction of castles was brought to naught. The kings also had a negative attitude to castle construction, since such structures could serve as hotbeds of separatism.
