Why were education and science in Byzantium in the 6-11 centuries more developed than in Western Europe?

During the early Middle Ages, the states of Western Europe were just forming on the territory of the former Western Roman Empire, these were barbarian kingdoms, where science and education had to be created from scratch. Byzantium, on the other hand, existed as the Eastern Roman Empire since 395. they called themselves “Romans”, that is, “Romans”. They inherited the infrastructure of the Roman period, including the training of architects, shipbuilding, foreign trade relations with the west and east (Persia, Arabs).
