Why were fungi isolated into an independent kingdom of living organisms?

Mushrooms belong to a separate kingdom of living organisms. They show signs of both plants and animals. They are brought together with plants by the osmotrophic type of nutrition, the ability for unlimited growth of the filamentous body, the presence of a rigid cell wall and reproduction by spores. Signs of animals are a heterotrophic type of nutrition, the presence of chitin in the cell wall, storage carbohydrate – glycogen, the presence of urea in nitrogen metabolism.
