Why were houses in Japan made of soft, flexible bamboo?

Houses in Japan were built from flexible and lightweight bamboo, primarily from frequent earthquakes. Also in such houses there is ideal ventilation, this is especially true for the Japanese, since there is a subtropical climate – unbearable heat in summer, high humidity and practically no wind.
