Why were mushrooms isolated into an independent kingdom?

Mushrooms occupy an intermediate position between plants and animals, therefore they were isolated into an independent kingdom. To feed mushrooms, ready-made organic matter is needed, which brings them closer to animals. But in the way food is absorbed – by absorption, not swallowing – they are similar to plants. The cell membranes of most fungi contain chitin, an organic substance characteristic of animals, namely insects.
