Why were the streets of European cities narrow?

In European cities, cramped and numerous houses were built due to lack of space. In Europe, they began to erect multi-storey buildings made of wood in order to fit all urban residents in them. The streets were getting narrow. The number of townspeople increased thanks to the development of factories and craft workshops. There was a high level of urbanization in European states. The number of city dwellers increased, but there were no places. Therefore, houses were built tightly to each other, and the upper floors often hung over the street.
