Without building the graph of the function y = -0.2x-3, find out whether each of the points belongs to the graph: A (-5; -2) and B (4; -2.2)

1. Graph of the function y = -0.2x – 3. Check whether point A (-5; -2) belongs to this graph. Point A has coordinates x = -5, and y = -2. Substitute x into the given graph of the function and find y:

y = -0.2 * (-5) – 3 = 1-3 = -2.

The found “y” corresponds to the “y” coordinate of point A, that is, point A belongs to the graph of functions.

2. Let’s check whether the point B (4; -2,2) belongs to the graph. Point B has coordinates x = 4, y = -2.2. Let’s substitute x in the given graph of the function:

y = -0.2 * 4 – 3 = -0.8-3 = -3.8.

The found “y” does not correspond to the “y” coordinate of point B, so point B does not belong to the graph of functions.
